Starting July 1, 2025, households, small businesses, and community facilities across Australia will have access to a game-changing energy incentive: the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program. This $2.3 billion initiative by the Albanese Government aims to install over one million home batteries by 2030 and cut power bills by up to 90% for participating homes with solar systems.
At South Adelaide Electrical, we’re here to break it down for you — what it is, how it works, and how you can benefit.
What Is the Home Battery Rebate?
The rebate is a government-funded discount of up to 30% off the installed cost of a home battery system. For example, a 10 kWh battery could attract a rebate of up to $3,720. This incentive will be delivered through the existing Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), which has already helped over 4 million Aussie households install solar panels.
Importantly, the scheme is uncapped, meaning there’s no fixed number of rebates — it’s open to everyone who qualifies.
Key Benefits
- Net Zero Bill has never been more achievable since the $0.50 cent feed in tariff!
- Savings are up to $3,000 a year with a 13.5 KW/Hr battery
- $5000 saved on a 13.5 KW/Hr battery on average
- One federal rebate per property — but landlords and multi-property owners can claim for each solar-equipped property they own
Who’s Eligible?
As of current guidance:
- Homes or small businesses installing a battery between 5 kWh and 100 kWh (nominal capacity)
- Must not be energised and / or commissioned with an ECOC submitted
- First time ever – Obtain government funding for both Solar & Battery!
- All of our installations are Future Proof an ensure best value for money to limit all future expenses as best as practically possible!
- Installers must hold battery accreditation from Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA)
- Systems must be installed according to state electrical safety regulations
- Installations must not be tested before July 1 if you want the rebate
You don’t need to join a Virtual Power Plant (VPP), but batteries must be VPP-capable to be eligible.
For Businesses and Community Facilities
Small businesses and community organisations can also benefit — systems up to 100 kWh can be installed, but the rebate applies to the first 50 kWh of usable capacity.
Why Act Now?
Although the official program starts in July, demand is already sky-high. Installers will be in short supply. If you want to be one of the first to benefit:
- Get a quote now and lock in installation with a clause that it proceeds if eligibility remains unchanged
